Anthony George Wolking

A Kentucky Native, Anthony Wolking spent his formative years viewing the busting city of Cincinnati, OH from his childhood home on a hilltop across the Ohio River. He became aware of his desire to make and understand things, both visual and mechanical at an early age. His father was a mechanical engineer, draftsman, inventor, cabinetmaker, and mechanic. His mother is a teacher and seamstress to this day. Their encouragement and mentorship instilled my desire to teach, to work with my hands, and is clearly foundational in my ability to envision that which is possible; always striving for creative solutions. He has been a teacher for more than two decades, engaging art students in inner city after school programs, colleges, universities, and courses designed for the purpose of personal enrichment. His pursuit of art has taken him to many states as well as Great Britain, China, and Taiwan. He has exhibited both nationally and internationally where his work is retained by private and public collections. He currently resides in Ohio and teaches Sculpture, 3D Foundations, and Ceramics at Sinclair Community College.
The act of making fulfills my desire to be a producer, therefore, inferring my membership within a community. I find fulfillment in the making of objects that others may enjoy, desire, and possess. My work is process driven in that I explore what meaning my work may convey or how my work may emote a reaction. This coupled with creative play guides my way of working, giving way to investigations of society’s use of the resources of the physical world within the paradigm of culture. The resultant objects and images are my expression of our link to the material world and may be reflective both joyfully and critically on matters of our time. My purpose as a maker, is for the viewer to find my work visually engaging and intellectually stimulating through the thoughts the work may provoke, with the added potential of bringing about change within the viewer, their actions, habits, and/or ideas.
